About us…
Chris and Adrienne Roy
We purchased the Garden Motel lease and began running it at the beginning of July 2007. Since day 1 we have been commited to making our guests feel completely “at home” with us.
Who are we and where have we come from?
Both of us come from education backgrounds. Chris has been a secondary school teacher for twelve years, most recently a History Teacher at Otago Girls High School which he “retired” from at the end of term 2, 2007. A Dunedin boy, who attended Otago Boy’s High School and then Otago University, studying and practising law before finding “teaching”, Chris is enjoying the challenge of a different “people-oriented industry”. He loves living in Dunedin and is able to give guests advice from a local perspective!
Adrienne, a Taranaki-girl, who originally came to Dunedin as a university student, has been a primary school teacher, a secondary school Health and PE teacher and worked with tertiary students at Otago University whose goal was to become secondary school teachers. Struggling to combine full time work in teacher education, research and academia with life as a motellier, Adrienne finally said goodbye to university teaching in November 2008. She now combines her work in the motel with writing and publishing Physical Education secondary school teaching resources under the Ado Publications label as well as teaching Bikram Yoga at the local studio.
Finally there are three sons. Emerson (the eldest), is living with his wife Mandie and daughter Ashleigh and working in Dunedin. Caley, is a typical “I’m not sure what I should do now I’ve left school” teenager who also attends Otago University, flats in the city and comes home to empty the pantry and fridge most days. He is a keen musician, a drummer in a local band. Jaren, goes to school at Balmacewan Intermediate. A keen sportsman, he is particularly keen on soccer, athletics, and basketball. He is also the motel “newspaper boy”.
